When to go to the emergency room
Major health organizations, including the Cleveland Clinic and the NHS, list signs that a dental problem needs a hospital, not a dental office. They include:
• Trouble breathing or swallowing
• Swelling under your jaw or in your neck
• Swelling spreading toward your eye
• Trouble opening your mouth all the way
• Swelling under your tongue
• Bleeding from your mouth that won't stop
• A jaw that may be broken

What happens when you call
1. Call. Tell us what's going on and we'll give you the soonest time we have, usually the same day.
2. Exam. Dr. Reynolds finds what's causing the problem and explains your options and the cost before we start.
3. Treatment. Most problems are taken care of at the same visit, including pulling a tooth. If more work is needed, we get you out of pain today and plan the rest.
Common dental emergencies and what to do right now
Toothache
In pain? Until you can see us:
• Rinse your mouth with warm water.
• Gently floss to clear out any food stuck around the tooth.
• If there's mild swelling, hold a cold pack on the outside of your cheek.
• An over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help. Follow the directions on the label, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first if you're pregnant, have health conditions or take other medicines.
• Don't put aspirin or any pill directly on your tooth or gums. It can burn the gum.

Cracked or broken tooth
Rinse with warm water. If there's mild swelling, hold a cold pack on the outside of your cheek. If you have the broken piece, bring it. Call us to be seen as soon as possible.
Knocked-out adult tooth
Time matters. Pick the tooth up by the white top, not the root. If it's dirty, rinse it gently in milk and don't scrub it. If you can, gently push it back into place and bite on a clean cloth to hold it.
If you can't put it back, keep it in a cup of milk, or in your own saliva if you don't have milk. Don't let it dry out. Call us and come in right away, ideally within 30 minutes. If we're closed, go to the emergency room.
A knocked-out baby tooth should not be put back in. Call us.
Abscess or swelling
Signs include throbbing pain, swelling in your gum or face, a bad taste in your mouth and fever. Call us the same day. An infection can spread, so don't wait for it to go away.
Trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling under your jaw, in your neck or toward your eye? Go to the emergency room or call 911.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown if you have it and bring it with you. Chew on the other side until we see you. Call us and we'll get it fixed. If you need a new crown, no worries. We make same-day crowns right here in the office.
Broken denture
Don't try to glue it yourself. Bring all the pieces. We send repairs to our dental lab and let you know when it will be ready.
Something stuck between teeth
Try to gently remove it with floss. Don't use anything sharp or pointed. If it won't come out, call us.

Pulling a tooth: if a tooth needs to come out, we can usually do it at the same visit.
Root canals: Dr. Reynolds does root canals right here in the office, and our first goal is always getting you out of pain today.
Kids: we'll see your child, check what's going on and help you decide on the next step. We see kids for regular cleanings and checkups, too.
What does an emergency visit cost?
It depends on what you need. We accept most major insurance, and we'll tell you your cost before we start.
No insurance? We can still see you, and we offer third-party financing with monthly payments.
