The concept of brushing your teeth is very simple, but many patients are not achieving the effective clean their teeth need. Our team offers four tips to improve your toothbrushing technique and help you achieve a healthier smile:

1. Brush Gently. This may seem unwise because scrubbing your teeth seems like a more effective way of ridding your smile of plaque. However, aggressive brushing actually increases your risk of gum recession and can erode the tooth enamel. To help you brush more gently, try holding your toothbrush as you would a pencil and use a toothbrush that has soft bristles.

2. Employ a proper technique. The cleanliness of your teeth depends on how you brush them. Hold your toothbrush against the gums at a 45-degree angle and use short circular motions. Progress from the outer tooth surface to the backside, chewing surface, and then tongue to ensure you hit every spot.

3. Brush for the appropriate amount of time. You should be brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time. This will you effectively reach all areas of your teeth.

4. Consider using an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque than manual ones due to their small rotating heads.
